This is a distance- learning
course. In this course you will be given all of your instructions online; take quizzes
online; participate in discussion questions online; learn information using
power point slides and use instructor notes online. You will have to take your
midterm and final on campus or an approved location. Reality Checks will be downloaded from the
Internet and faxed or mailed to the instructor.

by Lial, Hornsby, Schneider
(Addison-Wesley Publisher)
§
ISBN# 0-321-27380X (includes Student Solutions
Manual)
If you are purchasing your text online, make sure you
get a student solutions manual. It will be a helpful guide as you do your
assignments from the text.
Supplementary Material will be added when
appropriate.
COURSE
DESCRIPTION: A study of trigonometry and analytic geometry. Topics included will be fundamental
trigonometry, graphs of trigonometric functions, trigonometric identities and
equations, inverse trigonometric functions, oblique triangles, complex numbers,
analytic geometry, systems of quadratic equations, and inequalities.
PREREQUISITE: MT125 (College Math I) or equivalent, and
appropriate score on Mathematics Department placement test.
COURSE
OBJECTIVES: Course
Objectives and General Education Objectives are posted separately under Course
Information in Angel.
COURSE
MATERIALS: A
Lecture CD’s will be loaned to you for this
course.
A student’s solutions manual will be packaged with
your text.
COURSE
OUTLINE: Chapters
1-8 from the text will be assigned.
Supplements will be provided for topics in the syllabus in addition to
Trigonometry.
EVALUATION: Evaluation will consist of the
following:
2 tests: 100 points
each: midterm and final. Each test is cumulative*. (See important dates for these exams)
6 quizzes: 20 points each (on line).**
4 reality checks: 10 points each (mailed, faxed or
hand carried)***
Attendance: There will be 6 discussion questions that
will require your participation. These
problems will be posted at various times on the message board. Each is worth 5 points for a total of 30
points. Your participation will count
for your attendance grade.
Course evaluation (5
points) The evaluation will be used to continue to improve the organization and
the delivery of this course.
*These
tests must be taken at South Campus or at a location mutually agreed upon. If you are not taking your midterm and final
at the South Campus of ECC, you must submit a proctor form. See posted under Course Information in Angel–
a proctor form to be filled out signed and submitted to me. NOTE: You must find your own proctor.
** Each
quiz is 20 points. You may drop the lowest grade. There will be an equivalent
of 6 quizzes worth 20 points each. These
will be taken online. Quiz completion
dates will be listed on the course assignment section as the course
progresses. Absolutely no make-up
quizzes will be allowed for any reason.
***Each
reality check is 10 points. You will
download the reality check and complete it and either mail, fax or deliver to
my office by the due date. These reality
checks will cover material on right angle trigonometry; graphing trig
functions; oblique triangles, and polynomial and rational functions. These topics are difficult to test totally on
line.
GRADING: Final grades
will be determined from the total number of points accumulated by the student
divided by the total number of possible points from the assessment instruments
defined in the section entitled EVALUATION.
Letter grades will be assigned as
follows:
A > 90,
80£ B <
90, 70 £C < 80,
60 £ D <
70, and F < 60.
Plus minus grades may be given.
Any student who stops attending,
but does not officially withdraw will receive an F grade.
ATTENDANCE: To be successful in this math course, it is important
that you check in each week to see what your assignments are and that you
complete the work assigned during that week.
See evaluation section above concerning attendance grade. The week begins on Wednesday and
ends on Tuesday.
WITHDRAWAL: Last day to officially withdraw from a course
is Tuesday, March 22. This is accomplished by completing a form from student
services. No teacher withdrawals will be
given.
LEARNING
SKILLS CENTERS: There is a center located at each
of the three campuses. After the first week of classes, students may drop in
for extra help in mathematics or students may make an appointment. The staff consists of peer tutors. The tutoring is free.
